Monitoring Life Sciences Locations |

The Life Sciences industry is much broader than the individual industries listed in most sets of official economic statistics (which generally follow the NACE-classification). Therefore, much-needed facts and figures about the Life Sciences industry just can’t be found in these statistics. Because decision makers in Life Sciences regions strongly depend on reliable data to monitor their region's development, BAKBASEL started the project «Monitoring Life Sciences Locations» in 2004. Based on discussions with experts in the field and data availability, the Life Sciences industry is defined as the combination of the pharmaceutical industry, agricultural chemistry, the industry of medical engineering, as well as R&D in these fields.
Within the «Monitoring Life Sciences Locations» project, BAKBASEL analyses and compares the development of various important Life Sciences locations. The goal of the monitoring is a comprehensive analysis of the competitiveness of these locations by using an internationally comparable database.
The results of the «Monitoring Life Sciences Locations» project provide detailed information about the local Life Sciences industry's performance and future prospects for the local economy, policy, and local industry or location organisations. In particular, the project shows where a region’s strengths and weaknesses lie when compared to competing regions. |

The core of the monitoring is a comprehensive database. The indicators included in the project measure the economic performance and importance of the industry on both a regional and a national level. Furthermore, the database contains indicators that measure various regional and national framework conditions. So far, 16 international regions and 15 countries have been chosen for the project whose timeframe ranges from 1980 to the year prior to the current year. The database is updated once a year and when needed, new Life Sciences locations can be integrated into the «Monitoring Life Sciences Locations» project. This allows a current and relevant benchmarking of the different leading and emerging Life Sciences locations. |
