There is a high consensus among policy analysts, civil society groups and scholars that good governance is increasingly important for sustained growth and development.
Govindicators.org defines Governance as: "Traditions and institutions by which the authority in a country is exercised. This includes the process by which governments are selected, monitored and replaced; the capacity of the government to effectively formulate and implement sound policies; and the respect of citizens and the state for the institutions that govern economic and social interactions among them."
BAKBASEL supports regional, national and supranational institutions in developing measures on how to monitor governance performance in different fields. Recent projects include topics such as decentralisation (how to measure the vertical power distribution in country and its impact on economic performance), openness (how to measure openness of a city/region) and intercultural exchange (how to measure the intensity of intercultural activities of a city and its impact on economic performance). |
