Location Factor Study: Monitoring Life Sciences Locations

BAK Basel Economics has undertaken a research project «Monitoring Life Sciences Locations» investigating the framework conditions (in all relevant spheres of action – societal, economic and political sphere) and the evolution of life sciences locations. By linking information on the performance of a selection of the most important life sciences locations with indicators about (influenceable) policy areas, the research projects gives a differentiated analysis of the life sciences locations.

The Final Report of Phase I of the project «Monitoring Life Sciences Locations» shows that the Swiss regions have been amongst the most dynamic of the 16 regions that have been compared by the concept of benchmarking. As for the locations in continental Europe, there is much to be done indeed with regard to the life sciences industry’s main framework conditions and locations factors. The Anglo-Saxon life sciences regions, on the other hand, have less need for improvement.

All of the continental European locations need to improve in the following areas: in the positioning of their healthcare policy, in the framework conditions that apply specifically to the life sciences, and in the general conditions that affect companies on the one hand and highly qualified employees on the other. For the Swiss locations it is most necessary to take action with respect to their universities, especially regarding their innovative capacity and their mass deficit in terms of quality and innovative power.
